ABOUT FLUR
Flur began in a garden...
Hey there, I’m Kathryn—the founder of Flùr Oils and Balms.
Flùr began in a cottage garden in Northland, in 2020, where we'd recently moved to. The garden was full of flowers, bees, and a whole lot of magic. I started making balms and oils using spray-free plants from the garden after discovering how good they were for the skin. And with so many bees buzzing around, I realised how important it was to protect pollinators - so I decided to set aside a portion of Flùr’s profits to one day create a bee and pollinator sanctuary. Small Business, Big Dreams - but you’ve got to start somewhere, right?
I didn’t want to create just another skincare brand. Once I learned how many chemicals are in mainstream products and that up to 65% of what you put on your skin can end up in your bloodstream, I knew I wanted to keep things natural. If I wouldn’t eat it, I probably shouldn’t be rubbing it all over my face either.
So, I focused on plant oils. Cultures around the world have used them for centuries to heal and restore skin. It’s not new - it’s just been forgotten. And I figured it was time we brought those simple, effective remedies back.
That’s where Flùr fits into the Slow Beauty movement. It’s all about being more conscious with what you use - choosing products that are simple, natural, and kind to both your skin and the planet. Many of our oils are zero waste, like the grapeseed oil in our hair oil, which comes from leftovers in the wine industry. Good for your skin, and good for reducing waste.
Slow beauty also means less is more. I just use a face oil after cleansing - no complicated routines. Oils are deeply nourishing and help lock in hydration, especially when your skin’s still damp.
And then there’s the Scent and Story side of Flùr.
After my mum passed in 2023 - she was a poet and storyteller - I started writing poems myself and created Flùr Tales as a tribute to her.
Every Friday, I share a little poem or nature-inspired reflection on social media. It’s become a lovely way to honour her and share a bit of beauty with others.
